DESIGN STRATEGIES
Red and Green is our proposal for the notorious Piro Kvartalas plot, one of the few last plots available for development at downtown Vilnius. The proposal builds on the tension between building (red) and nature (green), on a site that was previously a brick factory, and is perched by century old oak trees.
We consider the project as a civic space surrounded by buildings, and not merely a 24.000 m2 mixed use development. Such a prominent urban site must achieve far more than the pursuit of commercial success – it is a space for community, a space created for togetherness. We aspire that the location will become a true destination amongst Vilnius residents: open, welcoming, and inviting people to meet, rest, and share everyday life. At the same time, it must reflect the city’s history, its colors and textures, and recall the spirit of the site’s past – the former brickworks.
Our proposal was inspired by historic European city squares that have shaped people’s relationship with the city for centuries. Particularly inspiring is St. Mark’s Square in Venice: refined yet human in scale; monumental yet full of life. Its L-shaped public space connects different parts of the urban fabric, while the surrounding public buildings continuously “feed” the square with activity – day and night, throughout the year.
