DESIGN STRATEGIES

Kaunas Drive-In Mall

During the COVID crisis, we were all forced to adapt- quite violently so- to new ways of going about everyday life activities, such as working, education, and of course, shopping. It was made clear that face to face shopping had to go - and be replaced by online shopping and delivery of goods. This new condition was quite problematic for new shopping mall projects . Are we to invest only in logistic centers from now on ? Or is there a way we can attract people to interact physically in a controlled and limited way - until we know more about the emerging patterns of retail activity?

SBA Group invited us to think on the matter for a plot outside Lithuania’s second biggest city, Kaunas. We designed a hybrid logistics vs. mall structure ,where on the one hand, we get a logistics centre for different retailers to stock and dispatch their goods to the consumers, while on the other hand, we create a destination for people to drive in and pick up their goods -with the option to spend time to public amenities such as restaurants, cafes and open public spaces.

We have designed this destination in a way that, when COVID is no longer a factor, the structure can be transformed into a retail destination with emphasis on the pedestrian experience.
