DESIGN STRATEGIES
We recently designed a senior citizens' home at the Athens riviera, as part of the social infrastructure within the Ellinikon master plan. We set out to create a building that fights loneliness by helping people meet, be active and enjoy nature.
The brief required to maximize the amount of people to be hosted, while at the same time to provide state-of- the-art living quarters in terms of size, amenities and accesibility .Our main idea is to open up the building towards the main pedestrian axis of the area, which runs east-west and connects a school, sports facilities and a park atop a hill. A U shaped form allows the residents to flow freely in and out the area via a green courtyard at the center of the building. The courtyard is the heart of the compound, where people can socialize in small and large groups , and meet their families. At the ground floor, as expected, one finds all sorts of indoor common areas such as restaurant, workshops, classrooms, and medical support.
As the building develops upwards, 100 rooms are allocated at north-south axes so that they receive sunlight and views. The residential wings are supported by living rooms, kitchenettes and social spaces at the deepest side of the U. Last but not least, the green roofs are fully accessible and shaded with large pergolas. The intention here is to keep all MEP facilities at the basement and fully return the footprint taken by the building to people and nature.
