How does one design a museum for a civilization that produced the fiercest war machine in human history, the legendary Spartans?
We approached this problem linguistically first. We looked for keywords. Here is some of them : Laconic. Austere. Military. Organized. Brotherhood. Brutal.
A brutal brotherhood of austere, laconic soldiers.
When we came up with our catch phrase, we looked for its architectural - better yet, tectonic- metaphor that would “build it in stone”. We came up with a rhythmic series of beams (“spears”) which at the same time organize the space, bring light at the exhibition spaces and ultimately suspend the entire structure from few, carefully placed pillars. The brotherhood of spears surrounds and protects an early industrial monument, a former juice factory.
